5 Proven Life Coaching Tools and How to Use Them

Following are five coaching tools I have found invaluable. Most started off as basic processes from my training with CoachU and I developed and built on them as I gained experience.

I show you how I used them in my coaching practice for maximum client benefit. The links  below will take you to a summary of each tool and on to understanding and using the full coaching process.

They are yours for free! Keep them in your tools library to adapt and use when the right coaching situation arises.

Understand and Using The Be Do Have Life Coaching Model

If you haven't used the wonderful Be Do Have life coaching model, this simple explanation will help you understand the concept and how it works.

It's about coaching your client to Be (develop their behaviours and habits) to be able to easily Do (the actions needed) in order to Have (achieve the goal or outcome they desire)

Here's how to use Be Do Have with your clients. I include examples of how I have used it to help them achieve their outcomes and goals.

What Are Good Life Coaching Questions For the First Session?

There are many versions of coaching intake question forms to choose from. I found the questions I used were really relevant in getting to know the client and getting the coaching relationship off to a flying start.

Man and question mark over his head

For the greatest benefit, ask the client to agree to fill these in and return to you before the first session.

This can also save a lot of time in the early sessions by easily getting to know the client and identifying the issues that need to be addressed and what may be in the way.

The feedback I've had from clients is that answering these life coaching questions, though sometimes confronting, was really valuable coaching tool, not just for me as the coach but also helped the new client get more clarity and awareness of themselves.

They helped the client identify what goals they should set, what really were the issues or pain points they wanted to address. The questions also complimented the discussion we had in their Discovery session.

The Discovery session is an invaluable tool that supports you to give the client confidence that you are the perfect coach for them, and sign up. I cover it in depth in this section.

Check out my Intake Questions and how I present them to the client. You can adapt them to fit your coaching specialty or niche.

How Can You Say "No" Without Causing Offence?

The habit of saying YES, when they need to say NO is often a challenge for clients.

It can come from a deep belief they need to please to be liked or loved or a simple reluctance to disagree when they are asked to do something. You may even recognise this in yourself😊

It's a frustrating and debilitating habit often resulting in self-reproach for failing to say No and resentment of the person with whom the agreement to do something had been made.

My coaching tool How to Say No Elegantly, provides a framework that supports your clients to develop useful strategies for saying NO without causing offence or burning bridges in the relationship. I suggest you will find it useful when you have a client stuck in yes!

What Should I Ask at the End of a Coaching Program?

You'll find asking the right Evaluation Questions at the end of a coaching series or program has several advantages for both you and the client.

  • The right coaching evaluation questions help the client anchor the benefits of coaching with you, their wins and what they have learned about themselves.
  • The answers also help you get valuable feedback as to how effective your coaching has been and may highlight anything you may need to change or improve.
  • The client's answers to your questions can also provide valuable nuggets that, with their agreement, you can build in to a genuine testimonial.

Here are my evaluation or completion questions. I have found that asking these questions to be most powerful at the final coaching session both for the client and myself.

How Do You Fire a Coaching Client Nicely?

A life coach letting go or or firing a client who is uncoachable.

Sometimes, no matter how positive you are about coaching them and how well you have checked out that they are a good fit, the client turns out to be uncoachable, at least by you.

They drain your energy and confidents and you come to dread sessions with them.  You just want out but don't know how to do it or what to say.

So it's vital to have a stragegy to metaphorically fire a client and end the coaching relationship with them cleanly and nicely so that goodwill remaining between you.

I cover the key elements for firing a client nicely in this section of the website. The page also includes:

  • the three most common causes for wanting to fire a client
  • how to handle them without causing resentment or offence.
  • I also share  a couple of my own experiences in letting go of a client.
